With hurricane season quickly approaching securing your home and creating a supply kit is important whether you are evacuating or sheltering in place. Your kit can be a lifesaver during the storm. Here are some tips (Most people never think about # 5 or 6!) AND a BONUS – tips for securing your home fast!
Recommended Hurricane Kit Items:
- Non-perishable food & Water: Enough to last at least 3 days
- First-aid kit including any prescription medications
- Flashlights & batteries
- Cash and important documents
- Entertainment: Bring books, magazines, or games (Most people don’t think about this!)
- Special needs items: Include pet supplies and baby necessities, if applicable
Bonus: Tips for Securing Your Home:
- Cover all windows with hurricane shutters or boards. (Note: Tape can prevent glass from shattering but won’t stop windows from breaking.)
- If possible, use straps or clips to secure your roof to the house structure.
- Trim trees and shrubs and clear out rain gutters.
- Reinforce garage doors.
- Bring in outdoor furniture, garbage cans, decorations, and other unsecured items.
- If winds pick up, stay away from windows and doors, and securely brace internal doors.
